Weekly export of agricultural produce (October 11 to October 17, 2020)

20 October 20201,015.38 MT of agricultural produce worth of Nu. 32.98 million was exported during the period October 11 to October 17, 2020.

The export of agricultural produce via Phuentsholing dropped by more than 75 per cent because of the issue related to plant quarantine certification and non-acceptance by the Indian of commodities such as potato, ginger, apple and areca nut.  This issue has since been addressed and export is expected to increase in the following week. For similar reasons, export via Samdrup Jongkhar also dropped by more than 48 per cent in value. According to RAMCO-Monggar, during the first week of October potato and ginger were exported; while during this week only potato was available for export.

On the contrary export via Gelephu increased by as much as 95 per cent in value term. This was mainly due to export disruption to India via Phuntsholing, wherein the farmers from Phobjikha, Khotakha and Bumthang took their potatoes to Gelephu for export. In addition to potato, ginger and cardamom, 24 MT of vegetables (bean, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower and radish) worth of Nu. 0.67 million was also exported during this period.

During this period, the export of cardamom took place only via Gelephu. Around 6 MT of cardamom worth of Nu.3.30 million was exported to Bangladesh.
